The Story Behind BDWord

How did the idea come about?

Saiful came from a Bangla-medium background. During his graduation years, all textbooks and lectures were in English, which meant learning many new words every day. He found that searching for words in printed dictionaries was harder than learning the meanings themselves — and he was certain every Bangla-medium student shared this frustration.

He was involved in both the Computer Club and Language Club at his university, and was practising PHP at home. The famous "Bangla Academy English to Bangla Dictionary" was his reference book. The idea struck him: why not build software that finds word meanings automatically? He planned the project, discussed it with Rebeka — then president of the Language Club — who helped recruit volunteers to enter all the words manually using his software. Once finished, they decided to share it with club members. Demand grew so fast within the university that they launched it as a public online version.

What makes BDWord special?

BDWord delivers word meanings within seconds, supporting both English→Bangla and Bangla→English search. Its standout feature, "Read Text", lets users paste any passage and double-click any unknown word to see its meaning instantly — without leaving the page. BDWord also offers browser extensions for Chrome and Firefox, so users can look up any word on any website with just a double-click.

How is BDWord different from other dictionaries?

Other dictionaries are just dictionaries. BDWord is a reading companion — it helps users read any text comfortably by surfacing meanings on demand. Add to that misspelling detection, browser extensions, a vast word database, and lightning-fast load times, and you have a tool built for real-world learning.

What value does it add to society?

Bangladesh's education system is steadily moving toward digital resources. BDWord contributes to that movement by giving any learner instant access to word meanings while reading — saving time, reducing friction, and making English learning accessible to everyone with an internet connection.

How user-friendly is it?

Average page load time is under one second. Any user simply types a word and presses Search — the meaning appears instantly. If a word is misspelled, the system automatically detects and corrects it, then serves the right result. English-to-English meanings are also available, so users never need a second dictionary.

Who uses BDWord?
Around 60% of users are from Bangladesh, approximately 20% from India, and the remaining 20% come from more than 50 other countries worldwide. The primary age group is 15–30 — students preparing for higher studies and young professionals who need strong English for their careers.
