Singular Subject → Singular Verb এবং Plural Subject → Plural Verb — এটিই Subject-Verb Agreement-এর মূল ভিত্তি।
Agreement of Verb with Subject (কর্তার সাথে ক্রিয়ার সামঞ্জস্য) মানে হলো Subject-এর Number (Singular/Plural) ও Person অনুযায়ী সঠিক Verb ব্যবহার করা। এটি ইংরেজি ব্যাকরণের অন্যতম গুরুত্বপূর্ণ নিয়ম এবং SSC, HSC ও বিশ্ববিদ্যালয় ভর্তি পরীক্ষায় প্রতি বছর আসে।

Present Tense-এ মূল নিয়ম
Singular SubjectThe boy plays. / She reads. / He runs. / It works.
Plural SubjectThe boys play. / They read. / We run. / Dogs bark.
is / areHe is here. / She is tall. → They are here. / Boys are tall.
has / haveShe has a book. / He has time. → They have books. / We have time.
was / wereHe was there. / She was late. → They were there. / Boys were late.
বিশেষ নিয়মাবলী
নিয়ম ১: And দিয়ে যুক্ত Subject → Plural Verb
দুটি বা ততোধিক Subject 'and' দিয়ে যুক্ত হলে সাধারণত Plural Verb হয়। কিন্তু যদি Subject দুটি একই ব্যক্তি বা একটি ধারণা বোঝায় তাহলে Singular Verb।

কৌশল: "The poet and novelist" = একই ব্যক্তি (একটি 'the') → Singular। "The poet and the novelist" = দুজন আলাদা (দুটো 'the') → Plural।
নিয়ম ২: Or / Nor দিয়ে যুক্ত Subject
or / nor / either-or / neither-nor দিয়ে যুক্ত হলে কাছের Subject অনুযায়ী Verb হয় (Proximity Rule)।

নিয়ম ৩: Collective Noun
দলবাচক Noun (team, committee, family, class, jury, government, army, crowd) — দল হিসেবে একসাথে কাজ করলে Singular, আলাদা সদস্য হিসেবে কাজ করলে Plural।

কিছু Indefinite Pronoun সবসময় Singular, কিছু সবসময় Plural।

নিয়ম ৫: Prepositional Phrase মাঝে থাকলে
Subject ও Verb-এর মাঝে Prepositional Phrase (with, along with, together with, as well as, in addition to, including, excluding, except) থাকলে Verb সবসময় মূল Subject অনুযায়ী হয়।

মনে রাখুন: "The number" = একটি নির্দিষ্ট সংখ্যা → Singular। "A number" = অনেকগুলো → Plural। একইভাবে: "The majority is..." (সংখ্যা) কিন্তু "A majority are..." (অনেক মানুষ)।
